Burnout syndrome recognized as a disease by the World Health Organization for the first time

Fatigue, reduced performance, depression: burnout syndrome is difficult to define. The symptoms differ and the complaints of those affected can also vary greatly. This made it difficult for experts to give a clear definition of “burnout”. But now that is about to change, because the World Health Organization has recognized the syndrome as a disease for the first time. The specialists placed more emphasis on the cause of the stress condition than on the symptoms. Burnout is caused by the chronic stress that one is exposed to in professional life and that cannot be successfully dealt with. WHO emphasizes that it is only about stress at work and that the term should only be used in the context of the professional environment.

The decision to officially define burnout syndrome as a disease was made during a WHO leadership meeting in Geneva. For 20 years, the organization has compiled a list of recognized diseases,of addictionsand mental disorders. This list is intended to help physicians worldwide diagnose and treat patients. Burnout will be listed as a syndrome for the first time in the new classification list to be published in 2022.
