Making owls out of pine cones is child's play. Whether decorated with feathers, felt, cotton wool or beechnuts: the cute bird figures are a great eye-catcher and a wonderful autumn decoration for the home and garden.
Make owls out of pine cones and feathers
Kindergarten-aged children will certainly like the first DIY idea. Making the cute bird figures is not difficult at all and not a big challenge even for three-year-olds. The two important tasks - cutting and gluing - promote fine motor skills and improve coordination between the fingers. And the end result shines in cheerful autumn colors and will fascinate the children.
You need the following materials:
- Googly eyes
- Glitter paper
- colorful feather
- Silicone dots
- Scissors
In principle, you can also use universal glue or hot glue. Personally, I think the silicone dots are a better alternative - they are easy to install and there is no risk of fire.
The craft instructions are incredibly simple. First you draw triangles on glitter paper, then you cut them out. Then attach the wiggly eyes, a triangle and the feathers. Complete!
A tip: If you collect cones in the forest, first rinse them under running water and let them dry overnight. The next day you can start crafting.
Cute bird figure made of felt and cones
Every craft enthusiast probably has the materials for the second DIY idea at home - felt fabric, pipe cleaners and googly eyes is all you need to put together the cute figures. The next instructions are ideal for children of primary school age. You can also organize a craft party and make several owls yourself.
The materials at a glance:
- Cones
- Felt fabric (brown, orange, blue)
- orange or brown pipe cleaners
- self-adhesive googly eyes
- Scissors
- Hot glue
- Template (see end of article)
Print out the template attached below and trace the details onto felt or draw the details freehand. Then cut them out and put the eyes together. Glue the beak and attach the finished face and wings.
Now all that's left is to cut the pipe cleaners and wrap them. Glue the feet at the bottom.
It's the perfect oneCraft idea for a rainy weekend. The owls are a great way to spice up an autumn garland. But they can also be beautifully displayed on the windowsill.
DIY idea with natural materials from the forest
Don't have any craft materials at home? Then get creative with natural materials from the nearby forest or park. You need:
- Cones for the body
- a small cone or pumpkin seed for the beak
- Beechnuts and maple seeds for the eyes
- Tree bark for the wings
Collect the natural materials, clean them and let them dry overnight. The next day you can paint them however you want. Take acrylic paints, they have excellent coverage. Apply the paint with a flat brush and then allow the cones and seeds to dry. After 20 minutes you can start crafting.
Alternatively, you can put the owl together first and then paint it.
Snowy owl made of cotton wool: Inspired by Harry Potter
Everyone knows the snowy owl Hedwig from the Harry Potter books. The friendly bird inspired the next craft idea. The end result will surely delight all fans.
The materials at a glance:
- Cones (pine cones are best, but you can also use pine cones
- Cotton wool
- Felt fabric, white, black and yellow
- Googly eyes
Proceed as follows:
1. Pluck the cotton wool and press it piece by piece into the gaps between the stamens.
2. Cut out two yellow circles from felt fabric for the eyes. For the wings you need two details made of white felt.
3. Draw the feathers with a black marker. For the beak, cut a triangular detail out of black felt, which you can paint with a black felt-tip pen if desired.
4. Assemble the bird figure. You can use universal glue or hot glue for this purpose.
When the weather gets cold in the fall, I get my craft kit and cozy up in the living room with the kids. We love spending time together and having fun painting, cutting and gluing. And then enjoy the end result for a long time. We already have a small collection of different forest animals - we've already made squirrels from toilet paper rolls, cute pumpkins from socks, mushrooms and foxes from paper plates. The owls are a nice addition to this.
