We'll show you great ideas for outdoor Christmas decorations made of wood that you can recreate.
Christmas decorations for outside made of wood – use what you have
For our first idea for outdoor Christmas decorations made of wood, you don't have to do much. It is wonderful if you place it in a clearly visible placeStore firewood in the garden. And you use exactly this firewood by simply decorating it. Just a few fairy lights are enough to spice up this otherwise boring area and make it feel Christmassy.
Use fairy lightsthat are suitable for outdoor use and combine different light colors. Additional decorations such as lanterns, wreaths, garlands and others are of course also permitted. Experiment with what you have or get what you still need if you have a specific image in mind.
Rustic Christmas tree
- boards
- screws
- miter saw
- Screwdriver
- wooden beams
For the star:
- Hinges
- Triangles made of wood (leftover wood from the boards)
- 1 specially cut triangle for the star tip
Prepare the boards
So that you can determine the correct length of the beam, we recommend that you start by cutting the boards. Think about how long you would like the lowest and longest board to be. The example is a 70 cm long and 10 cm wide board. So cut the first one to this length, choosing the angle for the ends yourself and adjusting it on the miter saw.
For the next board, first cut one end at the same angle as before. Then place the already cut board above the second board and mark the same length. You then place this mark on the saw's ruler at 5. This way the second board will be 5 cm shorter than the previous one. If your saw does not have such a marking, simply mark where you want it. Proceed in the same way with the other boards (9 pieces in total): Each new board is 5 cm shorter than the previous one.
The correct bar length
If you now put all the boards together, you can measure the total length. This is necessary if not all boards are the same width and you want to make sure that the beam is long enough. In the example the beam is 90 cm long. Cut your beam to size.
Screw the stand and boards into place
For this oneWooden Christmas decorationsYou will also need a stand for outdoor use. You build this from two boards of the same length and two smaller pieces. You can see how to put these together in the picture. Screw the boards together from below with screws after you have already pre-drilled the holes. Also screw the beam in the middle from below.
Mark the center of each board and screw them to the beam. One screw per board should be enough for this size. But you can also use two screws for yoursChoose a Christmas tree.
Build a star
When you cut the boards for the outdoor Christmas decorations out of wood, you got plenty of wooden triangles. You can now use them to build a star with which you can design the top of the tree. Take 4 triangles and place them together as shown in the picture. This way you can measure the dimensions for the fifth triangle. Its two outer sides should be, so to speak, an extension of the two lower triangles. You then connect all the elements with hinges after you have already pre-drilled the holes for the screws.
Ladder for the entrance area
With such a self-made ladder you can wonderfully decorate your veranda or the area in front of the front door, but also other areas in the garden. The ladder is built from branches that you cut into the desired length. You can attach the rungs in two ways: either you pre-drill holes and screw them tight, or you use a hammer and nails and also wrap durable twine in an X shape around the rungs and bars.
Whichever option you choose, the ladder should not be used for climbing, but only for creating decorations. Any number of things are suitable for this: Christmas balls and other tree decorations, fairy lights, fir branches and much more. You can get really creative here and create beautiful arrangements. And the best thing about this extremely simple wooden outdoor Christmas decoration is that you can use it and design it to suit any time of year. Make your own snowflakes for outside
We would like to show you two different snowflakes that you can build and use as outdoor Christmas decorations made of wood. For the first one use:
- Craft wood (wooden handles)
- Wooden circles in three different sizes
- white paint (for painting or spraying as desired)
- Glitter
- Hot glue
Place the popsicle sticks together as shown in the picture to make theMaking a snowflake. The ends should always overlap a little. Feel free to come up with a different snowflake pattern. Once you're happy with the shape, glue the stems together and then color them white. If you use spray, you should do it outside or ventilate very well while doing so.
While the paint dries, color the circles too and immediately sprinkle with glitter. It is important that the paint is still wet so that the glitter can stick. It is therefore best to make one circle at a time. Now glue the dry circles to the places where the stems cross and there you have ithomemade snowflakecomplete. You can hang them outside with a pretty ribbon.
Balsa wood snowflake
This outdoor Christmas decoration made of wood is a little more complex. But that doesn't mean it's made difficult. You don't even need a saw or screws, just:
- 4 thin balsa boards (100 cm long)
- Roll tape measure
- Lineal
- Pencil
- Carpet knife
- Hot glue
- Thumbtacks
- Sawtooth hook for picture frames
- white paint for wood
- Foam brush
- optional: sandpaper
Cut boards to size
Measure 75 cm on all three boards and mark the spot with a pencil. Use the carpet knife to cut through the board at this point on a suitable surface. To do this, you have to cut sharply across the area several times. If the board forms splinters when you cut it, simply cut them off with the carpet knife. Then mark the middle on one board front and back and only on one side of the other two.
Take the first board, put a generous drop of hot glue on the center point and glue the second board on top in an x shape (center to center). Then again add hot glue to the center point of the second board and glue the third board across the “X”. While the glue dries for a while, prepare the remaining elements.
The little boards
The small branches at the ends of the long boards are still missing. To do this, first take the three small boards that were left over from cutting the long ones. These should each be 25 cm long. Halve them lengthwise. From the fourth balsa board, cut three more boards, each 25 cm long, and cut these in half lengthwise. You will receive 12 thin boards.
Form two of these boards into V shapes at a right angle (6 pieces in total) and glue them together. Then glue the finished V shapes to the back of the snowflake at the ends of the boards. Finally, secure them with thumbtacks. Also attach the hanging hook on the back.
Paint the snowflake
If you want, you can then paint (or spray) the snowflake white. Depending on the effect you want, you can apply one or more layers. Once the paint has dried, it can also be sanded here and there with sandpaper for oneinteresting shabby look. Of course, other colors can also be used.
Rustic wooden boxes
You can spice up a bare wall on the porch or terrace with such a homemade shelf. Use as many wooden boxes as you like and stack them on top of each other, sometimes vertically and sometimes horizontally. For safety reasons, you should not build more than two rows. And with this shelf you do what you do with shelves: you fill it with decorations.
Don't forget plenty of lights so that your beautiful Christmas shelf can be shown off well even in the dark. Make sure that these lights are also suitable for outdoor use. And once Christmas and winter are over, simply decorate the boxes for the next occasion.
Minimalist wooden Christmas trees
- 3 narrow wooden boards (dimensions below)
- Holzleim
- short nails
- Hammer
- Wooden kit
- sandpaper
- Wood varnish in any two colors for outdoor use
- Flockwalze
- Paint brush
You can either buy the boards and cut them to the specified dimensions yourself or ask a carpenter for help. Take the shortest board and place it upside down. Place the rectangular piece of wood in the middle that will serve as a support. Then nail it from below. The nails should be long enough to go through the rectangle and into the other board, but not out the other side. Therefore, choose the right length.
Using the wood glue, glue the other two sides of the triangle to the bottom one and put it aside to dry. Once the glue has dried, you can paint the wood in your chosen colors. If you use subtle colors, you canScandinavian style of Christmas decorationsunderline for outside made of wood. The finished Christmas trees can be additionally decorated with garlands or fairy lights as desired.
