Decorators, designers and just plant lovers are always looking for new interesting ways to introduce fresh greenery into our city apartments. Real
The flowers on the windowsill are decorative classics. They give every room a fresh touch and provide beautiful color accents. Today we will give you a few tips on how to choose the right flowers for the windowsill and how to arrange them beautifully.
Which plants are suitable for the windowsill?
When choosing, you must take into account their characteristics and care needs. For example, the shade-loving plant species placed on a south-facing window have a pale appearance. Likewise, don't expect lush blooms if the windows face north. In any case, it is recommended to choose a place where the plants can get at least a little sun.
There are so many types to choose from! First, consider the amount of light, window orientation, and whether or not there are any obstructions such as trees, buildings, or curtains. Here are some thoughts on your criteria:
care needs –Plants that are easy to care for are also hardy, adaptable to many conditions, tolerant of occasional mistreatment e.g. B. if you forget to water - in other words, they are beautiful and durable. Plant care shouldn't take much time. Checking the windowsill full of plants should take no more than five minutes once a week: check the soil moisture, water (if necessary), examine plants for insects or diseases, remove dried flowers and leaves, clean everything.
Size -Also note that window sill space is usually limited. This is crucial when selecting the pot size. In the maximum case, the window sill is 30 cm into the room, so pots with a diameter of 10 or 15 cm will fit. Whether large and thin, bushy, hanging - the size and shape of the foliage is a matter of taste and also depends on the space available.
Aesthetics –Once again, that’s up to you. Every plant has aesthetic value, but it depends on what you find attractive and pleasing. Check out the plant store, note the names of plants that jump out at you, and do some research to find out their care requirements.
For a window on the east and north sidesThe following flowers are well suited: ivy, philodendrons, dieffenbachia, window leaf (monstera), zamioculcas, peperomias, vaginal leaf, African violets, Dracaena species and spider plants.
For a sunny window or west and south windows:Cacti, money tree, aloe, elephant foot, birch fig and herbs. Orchids and bromeliads love sun.
Care all year round
In autumn and winter, when the light day is significantly shorter, the most important thing a houseplant needs is sunlight and moisture. Watering depends on the type of plant - one flower needs plenty of watering, the other must not be overwatered under any circumstances. From September onwards, the amount of water is gradually reduced as the plant prepares for the so-called hibernation and needs rest.
The intensity of watering also depends on the temperature in the room. As the temperature drops, you need to reduce the frequency of watering. Only plants that are above the heater need to be supplied with water regularly. However, the space near the heater is not suitable for many plants anyway.
In this case, you can overwinter the flowers in another place or use special stands for flowers on the windowsill. These keep the plants away from the dry heating air and are also a real eye-catcher.
Many plants also need to be watered and fertilized in spring and summer. Some types of flowers require the so-called foliar spraying. It should be noted that at any time of the year, especially in the summer months, you need to protect the flowers on the windowsill from direct sunlight.
Decorate the windowsill with flowers
When designing the window sill, the same techniques work as with any other type of decor. And that is perhaps the golden rule to learn: decorate like a wall shelf or a mantel and you would surely achieve remarkable results.
Create a plan
The worst thing is having a random pile of pots and flowers on the windowsill. To make it look decorative, you need a concept. Start with plants you like or create a focal point with a selection of interesting pots that repeat elements from the decor. You should definitely have an idea for the overall picture. Remember that the human eye perceives rhythm and symmetry as more pleasing. Don't overdo it. To showcase the beauty of each plant, there must be some free space around each pot.
And how should you arrange the pots on it if there are plants of different sizes? In this case, the one-to-three principle (one large flower and three small ones) works well. The emptiness around the plant on the windowsill will draw more attention to the pot than if it turned out to be part of a single green mass. The flower stands mentioned on the windowsill are also helpful in this case - so you can use the vertical space sensibly.
It is better to choose the pots in an identical style or made of the same material. You can also stick to a consistent color scheme - for example, all flower pots are white, but the shapes are different.
Succulent for sunny places
Succulents and other miniature species look good on a narrow windowsill.Mini gardensare now in fashion and the selection of suitable vessels is fabulously rich. The main thing is not to deviate from the general idea and follow a clear line. If you need even more creativity, you can plant mini plants in cups. Teapots are well suited for larger flowers.
Herbs for the kitchen
The windowsill is an excellent place for fragrant, tasty herbs. This way you can create a mini garden that is not only beautiful but also useful. Small signs with the names of the individual herbs are a great addition. Let your creativity run wild!
