Clean your mattress: Use these tips and home remedies to get your mattress sparkling clean again!

Think about it if you haven't cleaned your mattress in a long time: you probably spend six, seven, or even eight hours on it every night. During this time, dust, dead skin cells, sweat and body oils can get onto the mattress and eventually cause yellow stains. The environment also serves as a haven for dust mites. Then how can you clean your mattress?

Anyone who has ever spilled something on their mattress needs to know how to clean it. Mattress cleaning is not as complicated as it seems if you follow these simple instructions and take some important precautions.

How often should you clean the mattress?

You should clean your mattress once or twice a year. This is good news because cleaning them can be a time-consuming task. Even with a mattress protector, dust and other particles can build up over time - an annual refresh will keep your mattress clean.

Why turn mattress?

You should rotate and flip your mattress at least every three months. This helps against the impressions that arise when you sleep in the same place night after night. This is especially important if you share a bed with someone, as both sides of the mattress are subjected to stress every day.

Instructions for cleaning mattresses with a steam cleaner and baking powder or baking soda

You should first remove the old sheets so they can be washed, then clean up the dust: if your vacuum cleaner has an upholstery attachment, it's a breeze to use it to remove dust. If you or a family member suffers from allergies, it is recommended that you do this at least once every few months.

Then inject some steam into it. If you have a steam cleaner, run it over the mattress, keeping the nozzle as close to the fabric as possible and being careful not to spill the steam cleaner. If dust mites hide near the surface, the steam can reach and destroy them. To remove them, the mattress must be vacuumed again. You can also use your iron to spray the mattress with steam.

Wet a sponge and generously apply a mild dish soap solution to your mattressto clean again. Then thoroughly dry the mattress with a clean towel. It's best to let it air dry: you can also use a hairdryer or a fan (or open the windows if the weather is nice!) to make sure it's completely dry before remaking the bed. To prevent mold from forming, you should wait until the mattress is completely dry. Allowing them to air out throughout the day will also prevent dust mites and bacterial growth.

Method to eliminate yellow stains (urine, etc.) on the mattress

If you've spotted yellow stains on a mattress, they're probably due to sweat, oil, or urine. You can try whitening a mattress with a mixture of 250 ml hydrogen peroxide and 250 ml warm water and 1/4 teaspoon mild dish soap. However, it is not easy to wet clean an entire mattress and you should never completely soak it.

Pour the mixture into a spray bottle and apply generously to the surface. Leave the mixture on for about half an hour after working it in with a gentle brush or terry towel. Dab the mattress well to remove any remaining cleaning agent, spray it a second time with clean water, and then allow it to air dry completely. Try again or dilute the solution with a little more hydrogen peroxide if the discoloration persists.

Deodorize mattresses

You can eliminate odors with cornstarch and baking soda. Apply a mixture of both home remedies to the mattress before vacuuming and leave it to work for at least a few hours. The cornstarch absorbs the body oils while the baking soda fights the odors.
