With the end of summer, the cold days are also approaching. And the cold seasons are best spent comfortably in front of the fireplace. So time to prepare for it. We can't give you oneFirewood for the fireplaceget it, but show you how you can make chimney lighters yourself. Using the following instructions you can make great fire starters and then nothing will stand in the way of your warm autumn and winter evenings.
Make your own fireplace lighter with wax and natural materials
Let's be honest, the stove lighters you bought aren't really that nice to look at! However, if you make the fireplace lighters yourself, they will not only help you light the fire, but will also serve as a pretty decoration at all other times. These wax oven lighters are also ideal as gifts. What you need:
- wax
- Candle wick
- Natural materials such as pine cones, bay leaves, berries, cinnamon sticks and the like
- Muffinform
- Muffin paper cups
The wax fireplace lighters are really quick and easy to make. All you have to do is place the paper liners in the muffin tin and place a candle wick in each tin. Then distribute the selected natural materials around it. Melt the wax in a water bath and pour it into the paper molds. Once the wax has set, the lighters are ready. You can also use other shapes instead of muffin tins.
Make your own fireplace lighters out of pine cones
These oven lighters made of pine cones are just as pretty to look at and have a special look thanks to the wax. Still lookingfor a gift idea, which you can make yourself, you can choose this organic fireplace lighter. To ensure that it is truly ecological, only use organic products for its production. Arrange the finished firelighters in a pretty gift basket.
- Pine cones
- Soy wax flakes (in the example about 1 kg)
- Colorant for wax
- optional: scents for candles
- Candle wick
- wooden spoon
- heat-resistant container
- Pot
- Wax paper and aluminum foil
- Scissors
Place the heat-resistant container in the pot and then place it on the stove. To avoid dirtying your stove with wax during production, you can cover it with aluminum foil and/or wax paper or baking paper. Add water to the pot (not the other container!) and then heat it. Add the wax to the other container and melt it in this water bath, stirring constantly.
Make your own oven lighter - dye wax
Once the wax has liquefied, you can add the dye. To make it melt faster, you can chop it up beforehand. Then have a piece of baking paper ready to place the pine cones on to harden. However, before you make the chimney lighters yourself, you should test the color to see if you like the color or if you want to add more color (if it is too dark, add more wax to lighten it). To do this, simply put a small dab on a piece of aluminum foil. If you want, you can now mix a little fragrance oil into the wax.
Dip cones in wax
Then trim the wick and wrap it around the pine cone as shown in the instructions. Wait for the wax to cool a little (you're good to go when the wax starts to harden at the top). Hold the tenon by the loop and support it at the bottom with the wooden spoon to prevent the wick from unwinding again. Dip the cone into the wax, take it out again and let the excess wax drip off well. Place the cone on the baking paper to dry and in the meantime continue with the other cones.
Once the first layer has dried (after about 15 minutes), you can remove the lumps at the bottom of the cone and gradually dip each cone back into the wax and then allow it to drain and harden. This way you create multiple layers. In the meantime it will be necessary to melt the wax again. As soon as you are satisfied with the color of the pine cone, dip the tip and loop into the wax and you have made original oven lighters! You can make a large one from the remaining wax in a mason jarMake candle.
Oven lighter with wood shavings or sawdust
You can also make natural fireplace lighters yourself from sawdust. In addition, you will also need wax and some supplies. Below you will find everything you need summarized as well as the DIY instructions with which you can make the oven lighter yourself.
- Sawdust (alternatively, you can also make firelighters from wood wool)
- Beeswax pastilles
- Muffin baking pan
- Muffin paper cups
- empty tin can
If you would like to make the chimney lighters yourself, place the paper cases in the baking tray and then fill them with the sawdust or, if you use wood shavings for the chimney lighters, with the wool. Put the wax pastilles in the tin and melt them in a water bath. As soon as the wax has melted, you can use it to fill the molds. The tin can is hot! It is therefore best to wear gloves. Now let the wax molds cool and harden and you can use them or package them nicely as gifts.
Make your own fireplace lighter with a toilet paper roll
For your own use and if you don't value a particularly nice look, you can tooCollect toilet paper rollsand use these to make practical firelighters for the fireplace. Simply fill these with combustible materials. A really great idea is to use the lint that collects on the dryer filter. But sawdust, small cones and similar things are also suitable.
However, if you use materials such as tenons, you will need to seal the rolls. To do this, you can either press in the sides or wrap newspaper around the roll and then twist the two sides closed like you would with crackers. Simply stuff the dryer lint and sawdust or wood shavings into the toilet roll. You don't have to do anything else as they will then be stuck in there nicely.
With cork and spirit
Collect themCork your wine bottlesAnd now you can make practical fireplace lighters yourself that are also pretty to look at. You need:
- Wine corks
- Mason jar
- denatured alcohol
Take a large pickle jar and fill it with the corks. Then fill it with the denatured alcohol until the corks are covered, close it and let it sit for a few days. The corks absorb the spirit and in this way become the perfect oven lighters. Always use a sealable jar to avoid odors and to prevent the spirit from evaporating.
Make your own oven lighter with wax and cotton pads
This idea is also really quick to do. You can buy wax specifically or alternatively use leftover candles or a candle that you don't use. In this case, you probably already have all the necessary products at home. You can make these simple fireplace lighters yourself by following the instructions below:
- cotton pads
- wax or candle
- Pot
- heat-resistant container
- wooden spoon
- Never
- baking paper
- freezer bags
Heat the wax or candle in a double boiler or use an old pot. In both cases, you should choose a low heat and stir regularly to heat the wax gently and avoid burning. In the meantime, lay out baking paper. As soon as the wax is liquid, you can place the cotton pads in it and turn them with the tongs. Then let the pads dry on the baking paper and store the finished lighters in a sealable freezer bag.
Mini lighter for on the go
Instead of the classic lighter cubes that you can buy, you can also make these practical lighters for on the go. No matter if you are aCamping with campfireIf you have planned or are going to grill outdoors - with these simple tools you are guaranteed to be able to light a fire - provided, of course, that you also have a lighter or matches with you.
- Straws
- cotton balls
- lighter
- Never
- Scissors
Cut the straws into smaller pieces, grab one of the ends with tongs (so that a bit sticks out from the straw) and melt the plastic with a lighter. This way you weld the open end. Then take cotton wool and put some of it into the straw. If you twist the cotton a little, it will be easier to insert. You can also help with the tip of scissors or a chopstick. Leave a little space at the open end so that it can also be melted. Seal the other end too.
Small oven lighters with toilet paper rolls
We have already shown you an idea with toilet paper rolls, but we would like to offer you another variant. These are smaller lighters that are also suitable for trips. You need:
- cotton balls
- denatured alcohol
- Toilet paper rolls
- Yarn
- wax
- baking paper
- old pot
Cut the toilet rolls in half and close one of the sides by folding it as shown in the picture. Dip a few cotton balls into the alcohol and use them to fill the roll. Then fold the open side like the other to create a small, closed oneto receive packages. Additionally, tie it with twine. In this way you not only prevent the package from opening again. You will also receive a type of wick that will help you light the chimney starter. For this purpose, the ends of the yarn should not be too short.
Then melt the wax (e.g. leftover candles or purchased wax) in a pot over low heat. In the meantime, lay out baking paper on the work surface. Once the wax has melted, you can dip the packets into it and then place them on the baking paper to cool and harden. The purpose of the wax is to make the lighters waterproof and to prevent the spirit from evaporating.
Make your own fireplace lighter with egg carton
This idea, with which you can make your own chimney lighters, is a little similar to the first variant with toilet rolls, only this time youUse egg cartonsand in this way get more compact igniters. You need:
- Eiercarton
- Lint from the filter of a dryer (alternatively also wood chips, cotton wool or other materials already mentioned)
- Paraffin, beeswax or leftover candles
- baking paper
- Scissors or sharp knife
- optional: yarn
Cut off the lid of the egg carton and fill the containers with the selected fuel. Then place the box on baking paper to protect your work surface in case something drips next to it. Over low heat, melt the paraffin or wax and then pour it into the individual containers in the box so that the filling material can absorb the liquid.
Wait until everything cools down and cut off each of the containers. Then fold the four corners over each other and tie yarn around the package you receive. If you want to light the lighters later, use either the twine or an area that isn't soaked with wax. These lighters burn for around 15 to 20 minutes as the wax increases the burn time.
