Rose water, also known as rose hydrosol, is actually a byproduct of the steam distillation of roses. Classically, the flowers of the Damask rose are used for production, which are characterized by a very strong and intense scent. Approximately 70% of the total world production of rose oil and rose water is obtained in Bulgaria and the largest cultivation area for the wonderfully fragrant flowers is located there. There are other growing areas in India, Morocco and the Middle East, especially in Lebanon and Iran. Pure rose water must always be alcohol-free and has a high proportion of essential oils.

Step-by-step instructions

Pure rose water is a real all-rounder for skin and hair care. And the best thing is that you don't have to fly to Bulgaria to do it - you can easily do it yourself in your own kitchen!

For this you will need:

  • 300 ml distilled water
  • 1 handful of fresh rose petals, without stems and pollen

And this is how it's done:

  • Bring the water to the boil and pour it over half of the rose petals. Leave covered overnight or for at least 12 hours.
  • The next day, strain the sub and stir in the remaining leaves. Let it steep for another 12 hours.
  • Then pour the mixture through a coffee filter and remove the residue from the leaves.
  • Now all you have to do is fill the rose water into a suitable bottle and ideally store it in the refrigerator.

Make your own rose water with rose oil

You have a bottle of rose oil lying around at home and don't know how to use it. Below we will show you howMake your own rose watercan, completely without petals and just a few drops of rose oil.

To do this you need:

  • 1 liter of distilled water
  • about 5-6 drops of rose oil

And this is how it is prepared:

  • Heat the water to exactly 40 degrees and add the rose oil.
  • Pour the mixture into a suitable dark bottle and shake well.
  • Leave the rose water overnight in a dark place, preferably in a cupboard.
  • The next day, shake again and strain through a coffee filter. And your homemade rose water is ready!

Chocolate cookies with rose water Ingredients:

  • 230 grams of soft butter
  • 140 grams of sugar
  • 290 grams of wheat flour
  • 1 EL Rosenwasser
  • 1 TL Vanilleextrakt
  • 1/2 tsp fine sea salt

Chocolate icing:

  • melted dark chocolate
  • dried rose petals

Preparation:

  • Place flour and salt in a large bowl.
  • Mix the butter and sugar with a hand mixer until smooth.
  • Stir in rose water and vanilla extract and add everything to the flour.
  • Stir into a smooth dough, cover with plastic wrap and place in the refrigerator for 1-2 hours.
  • Preheat the oven to 180 degrees and let the dough rest at room temperature for 15 minutes.
  • Roll out the dough thinly and cut out cookies in the desired shape.
